Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal today directed authorities to approve at the earliest a signal-free road project between North Delhi's Wazirabad and the IGI Airport, which will bring down travel time on the 29- km stretch to 20-30 minutes.
PWD Minister Satyendar Jain said the LG asked the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre -- UTTIPEC -- to approve the project after officials of his department made a representation before him.
Jain said that once the North-South signal-free corridor, which will consist of elevated stretches and tunnel, is constructed, the travel time will be reduced to 20 to 30 minutes from the existing three hours.
The project is expected to be completed in three years from the date of its approval at an estimate cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
"The Lt Governor has directed the UTTIPEC to approve the Delhi government's ambitious North-South signal-free corridor project from Signature Bridge (Wazirabad) to IGI Airport at the earliest. It is expected that UTTIPEC will give its nod in one month," the PWD minister said.
The project will also help de-congest the city's roads.
A PWD official said that as part of project, a 6.1 km- long tunnel will be constructed from Zakira area to Pankha Road and thereafter, an elevated stretch go up to Urban Extension Area 2 (National Highway 8 Gurugram).
The minister said that a nine-km elevated stretch will also be built along Najaggarh drain.
"It will benefit commuters a lot. At present, the travel time from Wazirabad to IGI Airport is around three hours, but once this project is completed, it will be reduced to 20 to 30 minutes," he said.
Jain has said that the government plans to run high-speed electric buses on this stretch.
