Not enough cyber crime specialists, Mumbai top cop admits

Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar today admitted that the city police lacks enough trained personnel for dealing with the rising cyber crime.
He also mentioned that conviction rate in Mumbai had improved drastically, from 19 per cent five years ago to 60 per cent now.
During a question-answer session at the Indian Merchants Chamber, he said that cyber crime was a major issue.
"It's a major issue, we do need people especially to be trained for this. I do admit there aren't too many trained people in cyber crime," he said.
"We take help from other agencies, both government and private, to help us train our people and also help us in certain important cases," he said.

Rising cyber crime was a challenge, he stated. "IT Act says investigating officer cannot be below the rank of inspector. But we don't have so many trained inspectors."

"The conviction rate of Mumbai city has definitely improved. Five years back it was 19 per cent, today it is about 60 per cent," he said.
He also made a presentation on the traffic situation in the city. "Keeping Mumbai safe is the biggest challenge in terms of traffic control," he said.
Padsalgikar also mentioned, while describing how tough this task is, the case of Vilas Shinde, a traffic cop who is battling for his life in the hospital after being attacked with a wooden plank by a juvenile when asked for vehicle documents.
