The election is seen as an important rehearsal for the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition parties for the Assembly election next year.
"The state government has issued notification today for election to 91 municipalities across the state on April 25. The State Election Commission issued its notification subsequently," state Election Commissioner Susanta Ranjan Upadhyay told PTI.
On March 16 the SEC, which supervises civic and panchayat polls in West Bengal, had issued notification for the 144-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) election on April 18.
Upadhyaya had earlier on Sunday said he had asked for 50 companies of central forces for the election.
