"Increasingly the ocean is threatened. The reason for this conference is very simple: The world's oceans, as vast as they are, they are under siege from a combination of acidification that takes place through the CO2 that falls into the ocean, which is changing ocean species and environment; it is under threat from pollution.
"There are a bunch of dead zones around the world as a result of these things," Kerry said during a media round table.
Kerry said overfishing is another great danger being posed to Oceans as most of the world's major fisheries are being overfished.
"Not all, but most. And some have a better process of regulation than others, but the problem with it is there's a great debate over the science. There's a great battle for who's right and how do you base a regulatory rule on something if you don't really know," he said.
