US Secretary of State John Kerry has epxressed concern over the oceans' acidification due to pollution which leads to mutations in water species and environment.
"Increasingly the ocean is threatened. The reason for this conference is very simple: The world's oceans, as vast as they are, they are under siege from a combination of acidification that takes place through the CO2 that falls into the ocean, which is changing ocean species and environment; it is under threat from pollution.
"There are a bunch of dead zones around the world as a result of these things," Kerry said during a media round table.
The US is organizing first Ocean Conference on June 16 and 17, which would be attended by Government leaders from around the world -- heads of state and foreign ministers, in addition to scientists, environmentalists, and business leaders to discuss the danger to the ocean and the steps that should be taken to reverse the damage and restore the balance.
Kerry said overfishing is another great danger being posed to Oceans as most of the world's major fisheries are being overfished.
"Not all, but most. And some have a better process of regulation than others, but the problem with it is there's a great debate over the science. There's a great battle for who's right and how do you base a regulatory rule on something if you don't really know," he said.
