A non-cognisable offence has been registered against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for allegedly giving an inflammatory speech during campaigning ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, police said today.
"The NC was registered against Thackeray at Kalachowky police station yesterday under IPC sections 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 505(1)(b)(statement with an intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility)," Deputy Police Commissioner Ashok Dudhe said.
The alleged provocative speech was made in the city on April 21 in a political rally ahead of the LS polls.
"The complainant Yashwant Shinde (41), who is a businessman, has alleged that the politician's comments were intended to trigger differences among the Maharashtrians and non-Maharashtrians," the DCP said.
After seeking legal opinion on the complaint, the NC was registered yesterday, he said.
