The old Panju railway bridge between Naigaon and Bhayander here was damaged after a dredger hit its piers while going beneath it, police said today.
The incident happened in the evening on Saturday when a dredger called "Sea King" was passing under the bridge while the water level in the creek was high, police said.
The British-era bridge was decommissioned by the railways some years ago and therefore the mishap did not affect railway traffic in any way, the official added.
"Vasai police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Indian Railway Act. No arrest has been made so far and investigations are underway," a police official informed.
