Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today underscored the need for use of advancements in the field of science and technology to cater larger interests of the society by spinning economic growth and creating jobs.
Addressing a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) here, Omar stressed for a well-thought mechanism to develop a scientific temperament among the students and impart quality education at schools and colleges.
Through the principles of science, state's rich biodiversity can be utilised for economic growth and welfare of the people, he noted.
The Chief Minister said the state government would take all necessary initiatives to make science the agent of economic change and prosperity, and asked the Committee to come up with a concrete proposal in this regard.
"We have to focus on production of low volume-high value products as would accrue benefits to the State and the people holistically and give fillip to the economy," Omar said, noting that there is not much scope for large-scale industries in the Valley.
Omar asked the SAC to work out a module involving all stakeholders, including universities, colleges and schools besides the S&T Department, in imparting scientific knowledge to the students from the basic level.
The Chief Minister said the application of bio sciences in the agriculture sector will help evolve a solution to the problems of farmers in kandi and rain-fed areas, who could be provided with the option of alternate crops.
