Madras High Court bench today dismissed a petition seeking a direction to the state government to study the feasibility of setting up an 'Art Sculpture city' at nearby Yanai Malai in the wake of the state winding up the feasibility study committee formed by it.
Justices Chitra Venkataraman and S Vimala dismissed the petition filed by the Principal of the Government Sculpture College, A Arasu, observing that it was for the government to decide on such issues and court could not interfere.
The court also observed that government chose to withdraw the committee it had formed in the backdrop of opposition to the project, which was also rejected by the Archaeological commissioner.
"Once the Government is satisfied that there is no need for a committee based on the Archaeological Commissioner's report, we don't find any justifiable ground to interfere with the Government Order."
Arasu submitted that he had given a proposal to engrave a Bas Sculpture of 900 walking elephants, which would be a major attraction. Laser technology would be used to engrave the sculpture, and after a rough figure was made, 25,000 sculptors would work to create the "First Mega Wonder of the world"
The petitioner also submitted that government had not studied the pros and cons of the project and had shelved it on erroneous grounds.
