Police today arrested a member of a cattle lifting gang which had opened fire on a PCR van in South Delhi area recently.
"Jamshed (35), a resident of Faridabad, Haryana was arrested in wee hours from Fateh Pur Beri area here. The vehicle which was used by the gang while opening fire on the police has also been recovered," a senior police officer said.
The cattle lifting gang had opened fire on a PCR van when it tried to stop the vehicle which was being driven dangerously on the intervening night of April 23 and April 24. The PCR staff did retaliate but the accused had managed to escape.
Following the incident, two separate cases, one at New Friends Colony police station and another at Jaitpur police station were registered and investigation was taken up.
Acting on a tip off that the gang which was involved in the incident would be coming to Fateh Pur Beri area to commit yet another theft of cattle in the midnight, a trap was laid, he said.
"At around 01.20 AM, a vehicle was seen coming from Gurgaon side. It was signalled to stop but sensing the presence of police party, the vehicle driver sped up the same," the official said.
In a bid to flee, the driver ran the vehicle into bushes and its occupants tried to escape from there. The vehicle driver who was later identified as Jamshed by the team while other members of the gang managed to escape due to darkness, police said.
