Police said a labourer was run over by a truck, the driver of which subsequently took shelter at a steel mill in order to escape the ire of the protesters who came after him, forced their way into the mill and allegedly indulged in stone-pelting, causing damage to its property.
In the meantime, the owner of the truck arrived at the spot with his supporters and a heated exchange ensued between the two groups, police said.
Ludhiana DCP Dhruman Nimble said one person was arrested and four others were rounded up for investigations.
The person killed in the firing was identified as Vishwanath, he added.
However, the labourer who was crushed by the truck was yet to be identified.
Four empty cartridges were recovered from the spot, police said.
