OPD services were paralysed at PGIMS here today as the doctors went on a strike to protest the alleged manhandling of one of their colleagues at emergency ward by attendants of a woman patient.
Due to absence of doctors in OPD, the patients either returned or went to private hospitals, officials said.
Only a few doctors were available at the casualty ward, while nurses were also roped in to help the doctors in providing medical aid to patients, they said.
The doctors were demanding registration of case against the accused, besides ensuring their safety and security in the emergency ward.
According to officials, a 22-year-old woman from Khanda village in Sonepat, who had consumed poison, was brought to the casualty ward of the PGIMS on Friday evening. After some time, her attendants allegedly engaged in a verbal duel with a doctor on duty over some issue. The verbal duel turned violent, following which the infuriated attendants manhandled a doctor and creating ruckus in the casualty ward.
Though PGIMS Director Chand Singh Dhull and other senior administrative officials tried to persuade the agitating doctors to withdraw their strike but they did not relent.
