Over 16 lakh affected in UP floods, rescue operations on

Relief and rescue operations continued in full swing today as situation in flood-affected areas of Uttar Pradesh remained grim, with the number of people affected in the deluge crossing 16 lakh.
According to relief commissioner's office, a total of 16,68,195 people have been affected by the floods.
As many as 1,038 villages in 16 districts have been adversely hit, officials said, adding that so far 260 people have been killed in rain-related incidents this monsoon.
People in the affected areas are being shifted to safer places and flood chowkis are maintaining round the clock vigil in the affected areas, officials said.
According to the Central Water Commission report, all key rivers in the state are in spate due to continuous rainfall, as the South-West monsoon remained active over the state.
Eastern parts of the state are the worst-hit, with flood waters submerging large tracts of land in villages and cities alike.
In Ballia, a culvert on national highway 31 was washed away in the floods, but was repaired soon and the traffic was restored.
The CWC report said Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at Phaphamau, Chatnag, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Gazipur and Ballia.
Yamuna river at Naini, Sharda at Palia Kalan, Ghaghra at Elgin Bridge and Turtipar, Rapti at Balrampur, Burhi Rapti at Kakrahi and Quano river at Chandradeep Ghat were flowing above the red mark.
MeT office said moderate to rather heavy rain and thundershowers occurred at many places over the state, with heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places.
Rath received the maximum 25 cm of rainfall, followed by Garotha 14 cm, Agra 13 cm, Auraiya, Mathura and Katerniaghat 9 cm each, Kanpur, Moth and Mauranipur 7 cm each, Jhansi 6 cm, and Unnao, Palliakalan, Purwa, Hasanganj 5 cm each, it said.
Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at many places during the next 24 hours, the MeT forecast said.
