Over 27k dengue cases in country, 12k of chikungunya till Aug

Vector-borne disease dengue has affected more than 27,000 people and claimed 60 lives across the country while over 12,000 cases of chikungunya have been reported till last month.
According to provisional figures put by National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), around 27,879 cases of dengue have been reported all over the country and the disease has claimed 60 lives till August 31.
With over 5,000 affected cases in each of them, West Bengal, Odisha and Kerela have maximum number of dengue cases.
While West Bengal has reported 5,129 cases, with 22 deaths; in Odisha, the disease has affected 5,183 people and claimed nine lives.
In Kerala, 5,192 cases of dengue has been reported while nine people have lost their lives.
In Karnataka, 3,788 people have been affected by dengue while it has claimed six lives.
The NVBDCP figures for Delhi show there have been 487 cases of dengue and it has claimed two lives till August 31.
However, a municipal body report today said at least 1,158 cases of dengue have been reported in the national capital with nearly 390 of them being recorded in the first 10 days of September.
At least nine deaths due to dengue have been reported this year in the national capital, though the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which compiles the report on vector-borne diseases on behalf of all civic bodies here, has maintained the death tally at four.
Last year, 99,913 cases of dengue were reported while the vector-borne disease had claimed the lives of 220.
Similarly, around 12,255 cases of chinkungunya has been reported across the country with 8,941 affected in Karnataka alone, according to the NVBDCP.
In Maharastra, 839 chikungunya cases have been reported.
In Delhi, according to figures put up by NVBDCP, 432 cases of chikungunya have been reported.
