Pak court sentences 5 in honour killings case

A Pakistani court has sentenced one person to death and four others to life in jail for murdering four people, including three brothers, in the infamous Kohistan honour killings case that made global headlines in 2012.
Police had arrested the five suspects in the case who were brought before the court early this week amid tight security.
The convicts were also fined Rs 2 lakh each.
Amateur video footage had surfaced in 2012 in which two men belonging to Sunni Khel tribe were seen dancing while five women belonging to Saram Khel tribe were shown clapping at a village in the northern Kohistan district.

According to the police report, five men belonging to the Saram Khel had murdered four others including three brothers of the Sunni Khel to avenge the "dishonour" of the women of their tribe.
The incident left 15 others including six women injured.

Earlier, human rights activist Farzana Bari had claimed that five girls shown in the leaked video had also been murdered.
Bari demanded that the Chief Justice reopen the case.
The Supreme Court had taken up the case following reports that the five girls were killed for dancing at a marriage ceremony.
