President Pranab Mukherjee today said people of India and Bangladesh should "move and work" together as he recalled the bond that the two countries share of common history and struggle against British imperialism.
While speaking to a Bangladeshi youth delegation which arrived in India as part of a exchange programme and called on him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Mukherjee said he was sure that the spirit of love, affection and understanding, which will be the result of this exchange programme, will create a unifying bridge between the two countries.
He said people of the two countries should move and work together, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson quoted him as saying.
Welcoming the delegation, Mukherjee recalled his numerous visits to Bangladesh.
He said after assuming the office of the President of India, Bangladesh was the first country that he had visited and he fondly recalled this visit which took place in 2013, the spokesperson said.
Mukherjee added India and Bangladesh share common history, culture and struggle against British imperialism.
He congratulated the Sports Ministry, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for undertaking this initiative, saying such exchanges help people of both countries to know each other more intimately and share their thoughts, beliefs and faiths.
This exchange programme has been on since 2012 and it involves interaction of the Bangladeshi youth with locals here, visits to tourist and cultural sites and introduction to economic and social activities.
Sports minister Vijay Goel was also present during the event.
