The pilot project of the National Vocational Education Qualification Framework (NVEQF) was launched by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal in Gurgaon in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state education minister Geeta Bhukhal.

The Centrally sponsored scheme, under which this pilot has been initiated, provides for financial support for both infrastructural and capacity building in schools for introduction of vocational courses, recruitment of trained teachers and partner with local industry to provide hands on training.

The framework is aimed at enhancing employability of students in job market and is based on a competency-based modular approach with provision for credit accumulation and transfer.

The NVEQF, which is a nationally integrated education and competency-based skill framework, provides for multiple entry and exit at different levels within vocational education and provides a link with general education.

It also attempts to bring about a perception change in the way society views vocational education and restore its relevance in enhancing the employability of the country's youth, a HRD Ministry statement said.

One of the features of the programme is providing locally relevant education leading to skill development and enhancement of employability, arresting dropouts and also bringing back school dropouts into the fold of formal and informal education system.
