The Madras High Court bench here today ordered issue of notices to officials, including the Union Health Secretary and Tamil Nadu Principal Health Secretary, on a PIL seeking a direction to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences in this district.
Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice G Chockalingam sought replies from the officials by June 19.
The petitioner K K Ramesh submitted that if AIIMS was set up in Madurai, it would help the people of entire south Tamil Nadu apart from the districts of neighbouring Kerala.
It would help the people to get quality medical facility, he submitted.
He contended that in February establishment of seven AIIMS had been approved by the Centre, including one in Tamil Nadu with an intention to reduce the doctor-patient ratio.
The doctor-patient ratio in Tamil Nadu was 1:3000.
He said Madurai had all the infrastructure to set up the AIIMS.
