Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today directed officials to identify and take to task those responsible for massive embezzlement in the Kashmir Highway Project.
He issued the order after the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority informed him that the project had suffered from neglect and mismanagement over the past few years and that the citizens of Islamabad had suffered due to the failure to complete it on time.
Sharif also visited the project's site office on Kashmir Highway.
The CDA chief said rules and regulations were manipulated to benefit a few contractors and officers and this has resulted in delays, poor quality work and a substantial increase in the cost of the project.
Sharif said his government was committed to provide the best road network and other amenities to residents of the capital.
"State exchequer has been robbed while undertaking the Kashmir Highway Project and all those responsible would be held accountable and taken to task," he was quoted as saying in an official statement.
He emphasised that the best quality work and timely completion of the project must be ensured by officials.
