Police have busted a gang of robbers who used to barge into houses by posing as members of a temple committee seeking donations and then robbed unsuspecting women, who are alone at home.
Police have arrested four members of the gang -- Kulwant, Roshan Singh, Arjun and Roshan, all residents of Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
According to police, such gangs have been active across different parts of Ghaziabad.
"Around 3-4 members of this gang used to barge into houses by posing as members of a temple committee on the pretext of seeking donations for constructing a temple.
"The accused also showed idols of God, which they carried in their hands, so that the victim allowed them to enter the house. Seeing the victim alone in the house, they robbed cash, jewellery and other valuables at gunpoint," Deepak, station house officer, Modinagar police station, said.
Deepak also said that the arrested members of the gang had yesterday entered the house of one Amit Garg, located in Gurunanak area of Modinagar, when his wife was alone at home.
"Accused robbed Amit's wife of jewellery and some cash. They also assaulted her when she resisted their robbery attempt and fled the spot. Victim called up her husband, who immediately informed police," the SHO said.
Officer also said that all four accused were arrested in the late last evening from Modinagar Railway station, adding that police have recovered the robbed jewellery and cash from their possession.
Police have launched a manhunt to bust other such gangs.
