The district police claimed to have made a major breakthrough today in the case of a recent killing of Nallasopara-based real estate developer Rajesh Amarbahadur Singh (37) on November 5, near his office at around 11 am, after the arrest of four people including a gunman.
Senior police inspector Ravindra Badgujar of the Nallasopara police station said at a press conference at the police station today evening that all those arrested are from Mumbai and Vasai.
After the the gunning down of the developer, the police had registered an offence against motorcycle-borne killers under Section 302 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code, besides Section 3 and Section 25 of the Arms Act, he said.
Closed circuit televition (CCTV) footage and other clues were not of much help to the police who worked on other theories and zeroed in on the killers, the police said.
The police examined all probabilities including the relation of the victim with other developers.
The police identified those arrested as gunman Dhiraj Surendra Upadhyaya (26), Aamir @ Siftulen Toufiq Khan (22), who rode the bike, Mahesh Ramkrishna Shetty (37) and Santosh Narayan Shetty (29), the police said.
The police said that preliminary investigations revealed that Dhiraj had come on the bike driven by Aamir and fired at point blank range at the victim.
Firearms were brought from Uttar Pradesh and the weapon used in the killing was recovered from Bhiwandi, the police said.
Badgujar expressed confidence that the police would nab the main accused in the crime soon and added that the conspiracy to kill the developer was hatched a month ago and killers were promised good money.
The four accused allegedly watched the movements of the victim and stayed in Evershine City during this period, the police said.
