The accused have been identified as Madhulika, a resident of Uttarakhand, and Nigerian nationals Mark Eghe Ogunsede (34) and Imafidon Petro Osamuyiemen (33).
Using her defence background, Madhulika posed as a doctor of Indian origin serving in United Kingdom's defence department and befriended people through matrimonial website. The two Nigerians used to assume the roles of Custom Border Protection Officer (CBPO).
"Madhulika would tell her targets that her parents have passed away and she is ready to marry him and come to India. She would then claim to go to Afghanistan on an official mission and cook up a story of seizing huge quantities of gold biscuits.
Her two Nigerian accomplices, posing as CBPO would direct the victim to route the money into several bank accounts opened using fake identity cards.
The gang came under police scanner after a Haryana-based youth, who was involved in online trading of silver and other commodities, approached Crime Branch of Delhi Police to report that he was being duped of more than Rs 21 lakh.
Madhulika, whose father is a retired JCO from Indian Army, was running the racket with the two Nigerians, who had come to India on business visa and were living in Gurgaon.
