US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would travel to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia later this week as part of the Trump Administration's efforts to strengthen its ties with the countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
In Kuala Lumpur on August 2 and 3, Pompeo will meet senior Malaysian officials to discuss strengthening the Comprehensive Partnership and advancing common security and economic interests based on their strongly shared democratic values, the State Department said today.
Pompeo will participate in annual ASEAN-centered ministerial meetings in Singapore on August 3 and 4.
At the ASEAN Regional Forum, the East Asia Summit Ministerial, the US-ASEAN Ministerial, and Lower Mekong Initiative Ministerial, Pompeo will engage his fellow foreign ministers on the region's most pressing security challenges, promote the rules-based order, reinforce US' commitment to partnerships in the lower Mekong region, and reaffirm US' dedication to ASEAN and its friends and allies in the region, the State Department said.
In his meetings, Pompeo will discuss denuclearization of North Korea, upholding the rule?s-based order in the South China Sea, and countering terrorism.
He will meet with the prime minister and the foreign minister of Singapore.
In Jakarta on August 4 and 5, Pompeo will discuss advancing the shared security and bilateral trade and investment goals, affirm ASEAN centrality, and highlight Indonesia's leadership in realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.
