Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today led an 'anti-dengue' rally here to create awareness among people on the 'dos and don'ts' to prevent spread of the disease.
She carried a placard to spread the message on dengue and appealed to public to ensure that they did not give room for breeding of mosquitoes.
Students from various educational institutions took part in the rally which started at Raj Nivas (office of the Lt Governor) at 6.15 a.m and passed through main thoroughfares and lanes in Puducherry.
Addressing the participants, Bedi said the purpose of the rally was two-fold.
She said the first was to urge all sections of people to eradicate mosquitoes and the second was to appeal to them to say 'no to crackers' during the forthcoming Diwali celebrations in the Union Territory.
The Lt Governor and Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had separately visited a government hospital here on October 2 and interacted with patients receiving treatment for dengue.
While Bedi had expressed concern and said there was 700 per cent increase in the incidence of dengue since last year, the Chief Minister had asserted that the situation was under control in the Union Territory.
Bedi had held joint meetings with officials of various departments concerned with regard to eradication of mosquitoes and curbing spread of dengue.
The former IPS officer has been at loggerheads with the Congress government here on several issues since taking over as Lt Governor last year.
