Beni Prasad Verma who yesterday quit Congress to return to Samajwadi Party said that post and power was necessary to ensure the development of one's region as well as society.
"No one in politics is a sanyasi (ascetic)...It is for post and power..It is only then that the development of state, country and society can be ensured", Beni told newspersons in response to questions on him being accused as an opportunist after his return to SP.
"Post and power is necessary to ensure the development of one's own region as well as society", he said.
Responding to a question that some leaders fear that his return to the SP will upset their position in the party, Beni Verma said that he has returned for the better of all and not to damage anyone.
'All these are like plants planted by me..Why would I try to uproot them", he said.
When reminded that he used to call Samajwadi Party as the party of the corrupt, goonda and mafia elements while in the Congress, he said that at that time he was in the opponent party and so used to oppose SP.
"Today this problem is on the rise in the whole society..We all will have to improve only then the society and country will become a better place", he said.
He claimed that in the coming 2017 Assembly polls, SP will perform better and will again form the government.
He also claimed that he was feeling suffocated in the Congress for the past two years.
"I was in the Congress but my heart was in the Samajwadi Party. Had a talk with Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) and he called me over to join the party", he added.
