With nobody willing to become a principal of a college in view of a spurt in campus violence of late, the West Bengal government is planning to start recruitment for the posts of vice-principals.
"We are planning to start recruitment for the posts of vice-principals in colleges," state education minister Partha Chatterjee today said in the Assembly.
Chatterjee said that posts of vice-principals would be initially introduced at smaller colleges and later on introduced in big colleges.
Vice-principals' posts would be introduced in colleges run by teachers-in-charge, who would also be eligible to apply for the post.
There are several colleges in the state where teachers-in-charge are running the show, but they were unwilling to take the responsibility of the principal owing to a spurt in campus violence recently.
Sources said that the government was trying to enhance the perks for the post of principal to invite application.
Meanwhile, the state assembly today introduced a Bill to amend the West Bengal Collage Service Commission Act, 2012, which will come in force at once.
As per the amendment, for smooth functioning of the financial affairs of the state College Service Commission a proposed post of whole-time Finance Officer would be required.
The post is proposed from deputation from the state's audit and accounts service and in case of non-availability of persons from the Cadre, the post of Finance officer may be filled up from the teachers or officers of the government or government-aided colleges or from state-aided universities.
Similar provision has also been proposed in case of secretary of the commission if a suitable persons from the state government cadre is not found.
The state government has created various posts of associate professors and professors in government-aided colleges. The commission currently, only allowed to select assistant professors and principals in government-aided collages, the amendment said.
The state College Service Commission at present has all part-time honorary members except the chairman. And during important meetings, most of these members were found absent.
So to remove this difficulty, the Commission proposed to induct full-time members to make the decision-making process of the body faster.
