A pro-Tamil outfit today claimed Sri Lanka was attempting to settle its people in Mannar district, a stronghold of Tamils, and has urged the United Nations to intervene in the matter.
Releasing a document claimed to have been issued on July 18 this year by "Mannar District Secretariat," the outfit The May 17 Movement's leader G Thirumurugan alleged the island nation's government was making arrangements for resettlement of Sinhalese Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Mannar.
"The document directs the concerned officials to take immediate and effective action in a week to identify 500 Sinhalese families for the explicit purpose of "relocation" in the traditional Tamil area of Mannar," he alleged.
"This document makes it clear that the Lessons Learnt and Reconcilation Commission (LLRC) recommendations are nothing but a farce. We urge the international community and the UN to take note of this and hold an independent investigation," Thirumurugan said.
