Indian-born filmmaker Rajiv Terwardker has finally managed to get a release date for his dream cross-cultural film "Free State" after a long wait of four years.
"Free State" is a social drama revolving around the love story of a young Indian man from a shopkeeper's family and a white Afrikaner church leader's daughter, who lives in Free State.
The movie is based in an era when cross-cultural relationships were banned by apartheid legislation.
Terwardker decided to make the film after initiating the first Utkarsh Marathi Film Festival in South Africa in 2012.
He then organized Indian International Film Festival (IIFFSA) of South Africa 2014, where Sallas De Jager won the best director award and Terwardker was quick to bring Jager on board for "Free State".
"I was hoping that I will get the best director from South Africa and work with him to accomplish my first dream project in the South African film industry," Terwardker said at the South African premiere of the film.
The movie has already won the best director award at the Luxor Film Festival in Egypt and best cinematographer award at the Garden State Film Festival in New Jersey.
"Free State" will release nationwide on April 27, the public holiday in the country marking the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as its first democratically-elected president after decades of apartheid rule.
