A university professor arrested last year for circulating an Internet cartoon of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, today moved Calcutta High Court for direction on the West Bengal government to comply with the WBHRC recommendation for payment of compensation to him.
Taking up the petition of Prof Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpore University, a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice A K Banerjee and Justice D Basak directed the state government to file an affidavit within three weeks on the issue.
Mahapatra would have to file his reply on the state's affidavit within another week and the matter would be taken up for hearing after that, the bench directed.
The West Bengal Human Rights Commission had recommended a compensation of Rs 50,000 to Mahapatra.
The state government had rejected WBHRC's recommendation for compensation to the professor, stating that there was no violation of human rights.
Challenging this, Mahapatra had filed the petition in the high court on November seven.
