Punjab DGP reviews security preparedness in border districts

DGP Dinkar Gupta on Friday reviewed the security preparedness in Punjab's border districts and asked the police force to intensify checks in the wake of threat from Pakistan-based terrorists.

He also ordered a series of measures to tighten the noose around gangsters and drug smugglers, an official statement read.

He constituted teams to pursue wanted gangsters and directed SSPs and commissioners of police in all districts to give personal attention to control the crime against women.

The top police officials were also told to ensure that all directly recruited sub-inspectors and constables after 2010 served at police stations for at least two years.

Besides asking the officers to hold weekly meetings to check crime in each district, the DGP asked field officers to prevent vehicle thefts and street crimes on a priority.

Taking note of the security challenges before the state, the DGP stressed on the need to keep an effective check on all kinds of crime in winter.

He said during this time, Pakistan is known to intensify its attempts to infiltrate into Punjab and J-K.

The DGP also held a separate meeting with the ADGP (Internal Security), ADGP (Law and Order), IG (Border) and SSPs of seven border districts.

The DGP carried out a comprehensive review of the drive against drugs, discussing supply reduction strategies with senior police officers.

All commissioners of police and SSPs were ordered to withdraw sub-inspectors/ASIs posted on personal security duties with immediate effect, except those deployed with highly threatened protectees.

The measure has been taken to ensure proper investigation of NDPS cases in the state, said Gupta.

It was also decided that the performance of SHOs and sub-divisional police officers would be checked on a monthly basis on pre-defined parameters.
