Punjab to seek Pak cattle breeder help for boosting dairy farm

A Pakistan-based cattle breeder today assured the Punjab government to provide support for the promotion of indigenous breed of Sahiwal cattle in order to boost dairy farming in the state.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today held a meeting with Pakistan's leading Sahiwal Cattle Breeder Mohammad Aftab Ahmad Khan Wattoo here.
During the meeting, Wattoo, who is also the President of Sahiwal Cattle Breeders Society of Pakistan's Punjab, agreed to provide fulsome support and cooperation for the promotion of indigenous breed of Sahiwal as this breed is far more disease resistant and adaptable to local climatic conditions, said an official release.
Badal asked the Animal husbandry department to prepare a comprehensive conservation plan to introduce high yielding Sahiwal breeds of milch cattle in the existing livestock on mass scale in the state.
He directed the department to tie up with the Brazil government to import semen of the Sahiwal cattle to cater to the needs of the state's dairy farmers who intend to rear Sahiwal breed cattle in a big way.
Badal also approved to set up Sahiwal Cattle Breeders Society in Punjab that would initiate a vigorous campaign to bring awareness to promote Sahiwal breed for its commercial viability.
On the occasion, representative of Vechur Conservation Trust, Kerala, Dr K C Jayan apprised the Chief Minister of the 'Kasargod' cow breed of Kerala and medicinal values of its milk.
