An executive engineer of Odisha's Public Works Department (PWD) was arrested by vigilance sleuths after over Rs 3.28 lakh alleged unaccounted cash was recovered from his car, the police said today.
Acting on a tip-off about collection of huge amount as bribe by Niroj Kumar Dash, executive engineer, roads and building, Puri, who was proceeding towards Bhubaneswar, vigilance officers intercepted his vehicle on Saturday night at Pipili toll gate, a vigilance release said.
A sum of Rs 3,28,500 was found from the possession of Dash. On being asked, Dash failed to account satisfactorily for possession of such a huge amount of cash, it said.
The vigilance wing registered a case against Dash, who was arrested, forwarded to the court yesterday and he was remanded to judicial custody till April 13.
In this connection, his residential government quarter in Bhubaneswar and his office chamber at Puri were searched simultaneously.
During search, an additional Rs 4,34,590 in cash, one plot at Puri, one flat at Dhauli, one flat at Samantarapur in Bhubaneswar, investment in LIC, fix deposits in banks and post offices, gold and silver ornaments, a car, a motor cycle with other documents relating to investment in shares/debentures/bonds/pass books of different banks have been recovered, the release said.
The balance in different bank accounts, bank lockers and details of investment are being verified.
