Nearly 1,000 workers of People' Welfare Front (PWF) today staged a four-hour dharna here, condemning the police action against pro-jallikattu protesters in Chennai and in the city.
The dharna, held under the leadership of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Tol Thirumavalavan, condemned police action in firing teargas and making lathicharge against the students and others on Jan 23 and sought stringent action against the erring personnel.
The protesters belonging to PWF constituents -- VCK, CPI and CPI(M) -- also alleged that in order to hide their 'excesses', police was making a 'false' propoganda that anti-social elements had infiltrated the protest.
They urged the government to take stringent action against police personnel allegedly involved in the violence, release innocent youths arrested on charges of violence.
Senior leaders, including CPIM Central Committee member U Vasuki, former CPIM MP, P R Natarajan, also condemned the lathicharge on the functionaries of Left Parties, SFI and DYFI activities here.
They also wanted action against City Police Commissioner A Amalraj for allegedly speaking ill of SFI, DYFI and a few other registered organisations at a recent press meet.
Thirumavalavan said the PWF will move the Court, if the government failed to take action against the erring police officials.
