Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who has been aggressively raising the cause of farmers, will visit the birthplace of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh on June 2.
Congress is leaving no stone unturned to make his visit a success in a bid to reach out to the Dalit constituency a year before the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar in 2016, a senior party leader said today.
The party has formed a panel headed by one of its general secretaries and former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijay Singh who is arriving in Indore tomorrow to oversee the preparations for Rahul's visit, he said.
However, the ruling BJP is not according much importance to Rahul's visit.
"Rahul and his family have nothing to do with Ambedkar's ideology or legacy. Congress vice president won't be either accepted by public or Ambedkar's followers," state unit BJP chief Nandkumar Singh Chauhan told PTI.
Chauhan said that Shivraj Singh Chouhan government has turned Ambedkar's birthplace in Mhow into a pilgrimage centre by building a memorial.
"Now, the Central government led by (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi is going to build an international centre in New Delhi to propagate teachings and thoughts (of Ambedkar)," he said.
After returning from his unexplained sabbatical from active politics earlier this year, Rahul has taken up the issue of agrarian crisis and has been criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi inside Parliament and outside.
He has so far visited farmers in Punjab and undertaken foot march in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, known for a large number of suicides by farmers, and in Telangana.
