Rare cardiac surgery performed

Providing relief to a 57-year-old patient from Oman, a rare and complex hybrid surgery was recently performed at the Aster Medcity here, part of the Dubai headquartered Aster DM Healthcare.
The patient, S Ali, was suffering from severe pain in the left leg for a few months. The cause of the problem could not be identified although he had consulted many doctors in oman.
He came to India and met Dr Manoj P Nair, Lead Senior Consultant Cardiovascular Surgeon at Aster Medcity.
Dr Nair examined Ali and found him to be suffering from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (abnormal and dilatation of the main blood vessel in the human body).The pain in the leg was caused by the progressive reduction in blood flow to his left leg. The complexity of the ailment was such that this big blood vessel could break open and burst anytime,he told reporters here.

Since opening of the abdomen for a major surgical procedure for managing the aneurysm would have been too risky in this patient who had a heart disease, it was decided to do the treatment procedure in Hybrid Cath Lab, using stents.
The total cost of the surgery came up to Rs 12.5 lakh and the same would have caused about Rs 50 lakh abroad, he said.

Dr Harish Pillai, Chief Executive Officer, Aster Medcity, said those suffering from such advanced Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm problems should have an early diagnosis made.
Built with an investment of USD 300 million, the multi-speciality hospital spread in 40 acres, will be formally inaugurated by mid August this year.

In the initial phase, Aster Medcity, will open with a 575-bed Quaternary Care Hospital with 9 centres of Excellence. In phase II, an additional 500 beds will be opened along with a Medical Convention centre, a 4 star hotel and apartments.
The 'DM network' started by Chairman, Dr Azad Moopen, presently consists of 150 establishments, providing primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare with management and consultancy services.
