'Sahitya Akademi' Award winning Assamese poet Ajit Barua's 90th birth anniversary was celebrated at Jengaraimukh in Majuli river island in the midst of Brahmaputra with lines of his poems recited and discussed.
Noted literary critic Dr Debabhuson Borah speaking on the occasion yesterday delved into Barua's unique style of poems and described him as one of the major modern poetic voices in Assamese literature.
Though the poet liked to call himself the 'poet of Brahmaputra', Borah said on the contrary Ajit Barua has been popularly known among people as 'Jengrair Kobi' for his remarkable poem 'Jengrai 1963'.
Educationist Prof Sengaram Morang in his inaugural speech spoke about certain unknown aspects regarding the creation of the 'Jengrai 1963' poem.
Jugol Hazarika, President of local literary body Sachipat contextualised the occasion at Jengaraimukh in a serene open ambience just a few metres away from Suwansiri and Kherkotia rivers as they were the source of inspirations on which the poet wrote his immortal Jengrai verses.
Basanta Hazarika of Sansipat reciting 'Jengrai 1963' described Ajit Barua as a great icon, poet, lyricist, novelist, critic and translator of Assamese literature.
Recitations of Barua's poems, renderings of his songs, besides discussions on his literary creations marked the occasion organised by 'Ajit Barua Anuragi Xamaj' in collaboration with 'Sansipat' with participation of noted literateurs Rajanikanta Bordoloi, Rajib Patir, Padma Pegu, Basanta Pegu, Bisweswar Pegu, Ananta Nath, Dimbeswar Bhuyan and Amiyo Chirang, among others.
