A group of parents of children from two schools in the affected belt and also some alert citizens have approached the district administration against the pollution, said advocate Gajanan Dhage, a resident of Nanded City.
Residents complained that garbage collected from five localities around Khadakwasla is dumped along the riverbank, posing a serious health risk to school children and people in surrounding areas.
In most cases, garbage is dumped and burnt barely 100 metres from school campuses, Dhage said.
In a letter to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, a group of residents said the garbage dumping and burning was a major source of pollution.
"The garbage is dumped in the riverbed and then it is set on fire. Garbage may contain anything like plastic, hospital waste, etc. And directly setting it on fire may create toxic smoke. The residents of Nanded City are facing issue of smoke hovering over the area. There are schools adjacent to this riverbed and the students are suffering the most because they spend seven hours in the school," the letter said.
