A 14-year-old boy, whose left leg had to be amputated below the knee after being hit by a rashly driven tanker, has been awarded over Rs eight lakh compensation by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.
MACT presiding officer Kiran Bansal directed Reliance General Insurance Company Ltd, insurer of the tanker, to pay Rs 8,70,466 to Imran Khan who was injured in the road accident in December 2011.
"Award is passed directing Reliance General Insurance Company Ltd, to pay a sum of Rs 8,70,466 (including interim compensation) in the name of injured (Khan) by way of depositing cheque in the tribunal...," the tribunal said.
"From the statements of the Chanda (victim's mother) and Imran, and in view of the record of the criminal case regarding the accident, it is proved that injured Imran Khan sustained injuries in the accident which occurred on December 24, 2011 due to rash and negligent driving of offending vehicle," it said.
According to the petition, on December 24, 2011 around 4:30 PM, the tanker, driven by Suran Singh in a rash and negligent manner, hit Khan in Ghaziabad.
As a result, he fell down on the road and sustained grievous injuries. Later, he was taken to a hospital for treatment and was discharged on February 7, 2012.
Due to the accident, North east Delhi resident Khan suffered 75 per cent disability of the left lower limb due to amputation.
The driver of the offending vehicle did not appear before the tribunal and was proceeded ex-parte.
