ASI Kuldeep Singh during checking of vehicles intercepted an SUV which was stolen from a hotel in Ambala, SP Kurukshetra Simardeep Singh said.
The two occupants of the car after seeing the police 'naka', left the vehicle and ran away. But ASI along with other cops chased them and caught hold of one of them who fired shot at him with a local made pistol, the SP said.
The cops also fired at robber and killed him on the spot while second robber managed to flee.
A case has been registered against the robbers under various sections of IPC including 302 (murder).
Meanwhile, Haryana government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family of deceased.
