Four robbers escaped from the lockup at the police station in Jamkhed, which falls in Maharashtra's Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde's constituency.
The robbers, who were arrested a day earlier, escaped around 11.30 PM yesterday, a police official told PTI from Jamkhed in Ahmednagar district.
Following the incident, two constables have been suspended.
Apparently under the cover of darkness as there was a power failure, they escaped by removing a British-era roof tile of the lockup. It had also rained for some time last night, police said.
The robbers were identified as Bharat Bhosle (25), Suresh Bhosle (20), Raosaheb Bhosle (30) and Hakim alias Vishal Bhosle (20), police said.
A case has been registered against them under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
