'American Hustle' helmer David O Russell has apologised for his controversial comments where he compared Jennifer Lawrence's shooting schedule for 'Hunger Games' as slavery.
The director had said that Lawrence, who plays the role of Katniss Everdeen in the franchise, was working like a slave on the series.
"I think they should give her breathing room over there because they're printing money, but she's a very alive person. I'll tell you what it is about that girl-talk about 12 years of slavery, that's what the franchise is. I'm going to get in so much trouble for saying that," Russell told The New York Daily News' Confidenti@l.
Russell soon released a statement to defuse the situation, calling it a poor attempt at humour.
"Clearly, I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humor. I realized it the minute I said it and I'm truly sorry," the director said.
Russell and Lawrence, 23, have had a successful collaboration in 'Silver Linings Playbook' and 'American Hustle'.
Lawrence won the best actress Golden Globe and Oscar for her role in 'Playbook'. She is already being considered a strong contender at the Oscars this year for 'Hustle' by recently bagging the Golden Globe for her supporting role in the movie.
