Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against former Punjab Cheif Minister and senior Congress leader for allegedly using foul and derogatory language for its candidate Prem Singh Chandumajra.
Secretary and SAD Spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema, in his complaint to the EC, said that Bhattal has used "unfounded and extremely derogatory remarks" against Chandumajra, who is also party General Secretary and esteemed leader having mass following and respect among the people.
Bhattal while addressing a rally at Lehragagga yesterday had reportedly called Chandumajra "dacoit and thief."
Terming her remarks as the highest act of indecency on part of the Congress leader, he said "the malicious remarks expressed by the former Chief Minister amounts to character assassination of Chandumajra, who is contesting election from Anandpur Sahib against senior Congress leader Ambika Soni as BJP-SAD combine candidate."
Urging the EC to take cognisance of Bhattal's "defamatory utterances", the SAD leader said that the provisions of Model Code of Conduct prohibit expression of any remarks against the personal conduct and personality of any political opponent.
"Such sinister remarks could create hatred amongst the voters," he said, demanding EC to initiate legal and criminal proceedings against her for violating MCC in the interest of public peace and justice.
