In an incident that nearly ruined his career, late US senator Kennedy was involved in a 1969 car crash on Chappaquiddick Island that took the life of his 28-year-old aide Mary Jo Kopechne, reported The Wrap.
Conspiracy theories surrounding what happened still abound, and Kennedy later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a car crash to resolve the matter.
Taylor-Johnson's film about Chappaquiddick will dramatise a week in the senator's life surrounding the fatal crash.
The project will tackle a taboo subject matter, much like the graphic sexual content in Taylor-Johnson's latest movie "50 Shades of Grey".
Earlier this year, she opted out of helming the sequel "Fifty Shades Darker" in the wake of creative differences with author EL James.
