Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam told the Assembly on Thursday that the Supreme Court has started uploading on its official website, the translations of its judgements in Tamil.

"I am happy to say that today the Supreme Court has started uploading its judgement in Tamil (on its website), he said.

The Minister recalled his assurance made earlier today and on previous occasions that steps would be taken to get Tamil also included in the list of languages in which the apex court judgments would be translated.

Earlier, ruling party MLA U Thaniyarasu in a special call motion spoke urging steps for getting Tamil included in the list of supreme court's regional languages so that people could read verdicts in Tamil.

The top court, meanwhile, uploaded cases including P Rajagopal and Others etc Vs The State of Tamil Nadu, and Joseph Easwaran Wapshare Vs Shirley Katheleen Wheeler in its 'vernacular judgments' section on its portal.

From Wednesday, the Supreme Court started uploading translated copies of its judgments (in the first phase) in six regional languages Assamese, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Odia and Telugu.

On July 4, DMK leader M K Stalin had demanded in the Assembly that the state government adopt a resolution seeking translation of Supreme Court judgments in Tamil as well.

Responding, Shanmugam had assured steps towards it but made it clear that going in for a resolution may appear as mounting pressure on the judiciary and advocated a wait and watch approach.

He had said that the government would take steps to reflect the sentiments of the members of the House to the notice of the Supreme Court so that its judgments are also translated into Tamil.
