South Central Railway (SCR) has developed and introduced a 'Road Mobile Accident Relief Van', which is the first of its kind in the zone.
The relief van is meant to reach derailment spots quickly to undertake re-railing and restoration works. The van will be handy to move to locations where a road approach is available at the accident site, to carry out restoration work quickly, SCR Chief Public Relations Officer K Sambasiva Rao said.
SCR General Manager P K Srivastava, who had conceived the idea of 'Road Mobile Accident Relief Van' on SCR launched it at the Coaching Depot in Bhoiguda here today.
Later, Srivastava visited Charlapalli Railway station to examine a live on-field demonstration of the capability of the Road Mobile Accident Relief Van which was used by railway personnel to lift wheels of a goods wagon which got derailed.
The derailed wagon was re-railed utilising equipment in the van, in a swift operation, he said.
Normally, in order to carry out re-railment and restoration in case of derailments, Accident Relief Trains are equipped with special hydraulic re-railing equipment and other special tools along with mechanical, electrical and engineering materials stationed at identified locations.
As and when the need arises, these Accident Relief Trains are moved to undertake re-railment and restoration works, he explained.
"In case of minor derailments of rolling stock, running of such Accident Relief Train can be avoided on highly saturated, heavy traffic routes by deploying road-borne re-railing equipment with minimum staff for quick restoration," Rao said.
A lorry has been suitably modified to house hydraulic re-railing equipment along with essential special tools and a few vital materials. The required staff has also been trained to carry out rescue operations using this Road Mobile Accident Relief Van, he said.
"After reviewing its performance, plans are afoot to extend such vans in all six divisions of the SCR," Rao said. The lorry was modified in-house by using available material in the workshop, he said.
