The Maharashtra Cabinet today approved a policy for senior citizens, aimed at ensuring the society takes their responsibility, giving them financial security, access to healthcare and housing and enabling them to lead a dignified life.
According to the policy, people attaining 65 years will be considered "senior citizens".
The decision taken at the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, came 13 years after the Centre framed a senior citizens policy.
According to the 2011 Census, one crore people out of the state's 11 crore population are above 60 years and among them, 47 per cent are men while 53 per cent women.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle called "Pune Mahanagar Metro Rail Corporation Limited" for the Pune metro project.
