Sensex extends early gains; rises over 1 pc in mid-session

Extending its early gains, the BSE benchmark index Sensex surged by 234 points in mid-session on funds buying in banking, capital goods and oil and gas stocks.
The 30-share barometer rose by 234.10 points, or 1.23 per cent, to 19,213.86 points in mid-session. The barometer touched a high of 19,249.35 points and a low of 18,929.38 during the day trade.
The Sensex has rallied over 700 points in the last two sessions.
The broad-based National Stock Exchange index rose by 80.85 points to 5,673.80 at the same time.
Brokers said the market sentiment remained bullish ever since new RBI governor Raghuram Rajan took over and announced slew of measures to boost economic growth.
Among banking stocks, ICICI Bank shot up by 4.90 per cent, HDFC by 0.62 per cent and SBI by 0.01 per cent.
ONGC was up by 5.52 per cent while RIL gained nearly 1 per cent.
