A shepherd and at least 25 sheep were run over by a train in Ahmednagar district of Central Maharashtra, police said Saturday.

The incident took place at Shrirampur in the district Saturday morning when the shepherd was grazing the animals near the tracks, a police official said.

As he chased some of his animals who had wandered onto the tracks, a speeding Jhelum Express knocked them down, the official said.

Identity of the deceased, who was estimated to be in his late forties, was yet to be ascertained, he said.
