Sports varsity to be set up in Assam: Gogoi

"The government is planning to set up a sports university keeping in view the immense importance of games and sports in inculcating self-discipline, competitive spirit and self-confidence," Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said here.

Addressing the open session of the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee of Gauhati Commerce College, Gogoi said the future of the state is 'very bright' despite concerns by some quarters. "The edifice of our state is so strong that it can withstand any pressure."

Education, he said, has to be in tune with the times and new subjects that are in demand have to be introduced by the universities and colleges.

"New concepts have to emerge. A sense of dynamism has to be infused into the education system to usher in a new dawn."

Gogoi said the education scenario in Assam was looking up with the coming up of new colleges and institutions in the public and private sectors in Assam. "The new institutions that have come up have opened up new vistas of opportunities."
