Stany takes sole lead after round five at chess tournament

International Master Stany G A emerged as the sole leader with five points after the fifth round of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open Chess Tournament here today.
In a dynamic Philidor game, Stany accounted for International Master Nitin S to maintain his all-win record in the tournament at Mount Litera School International in suburban Bandra.
Following Stany, with 4.5 points each, were Shardul Gagare, Swapnil S Dhopade, Akshat Khamparia, along with Himal Gusain. Top seed Gagare and Dhopade shared honours and a point as they were involved in a draw on the top board.
In an upset of the day, 9-year-old Gukesh D of Chennai stunned higher seeded Navalgund Niranjan.
Meanwhile, top seed Mohammad Fahad Rahman (4 points) led the field after the fourth round in the junior event held concurrently.
Running Rahman close in the title race is talented Nagpur boy Sadhwani Raunak, who accounted for S Abhinessh in the second board. Both the favorites lead with 4 points, with several players behind.
Results: Seniors (Round 5): Swapnil S Dhopade (4.5) drew with Shardul Gagare (4.5), Nitin S (3.5) lost to Stany G A (5), Ravi Teja S (3.5) lost to Himal Gusain (4.5), A L Muthaiah (3.5) lost to Akshat Khamparia (4.5), Sharma Dinesh K (4) drew with Deshmukh Anup (4), Adhithya S (3) lost to Himanshu Sharma (4), Navalgund Niranjan (3) lost to Gukesh D (4), Praggnanandhaa R (4) bt Manush Shah (3), Parnali S Dharia (3.5) drew with A Ra Harikrishnan (3.5).
