Karuppiah's house was allegedly pelted with stones resulting in damage to door panels and windscreen of his car late last night. The attackers also used filthy language abusing the expelled AIADMK functionary.
"Three persons have been arrested and a case has been filed against them under several sections of IPC including trespass, using filthy language, pelting stones and for causing damage," a police official told PTI.
A complaint over the alleged attack was made by Karuppiah's son Arumugam, he said.
The following day, he sent a letter to State Assembly authorities tendering his resignation from assembly membership. Authorities are expected to specify if his resignation has been accepted.
Parties, including DMK, BJP and the left parties, have condemned the incident.
